Supreme Court won’t block state from probing doctors who question COVID-19 policies

The U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 13 rejected an emergency application to block the Washington Medical Commission from investigating licensed physicians in the state over their criticism of COVID-19 policies. The Washington state commission considers the doctors’ dissenting views on the disease to be potentially dangerous misinformation that should be suppressed. The physicians counter that just because they have medical licenses they don’t surrender their free speech rights under the First Amendment. Supreme Court agrees to hear challenge to government proposal to extend relief for student borrowers

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear the federal government’s appeal of a lower court ruling halting the expansion of defenses that student loan borrowers can use to contest repayment. An association of colleges challenged the U.S. Department of Education’s rule setting the procedures that student borrowers can follow to establish that they were defrauded by the schools they attended and thereby qualify for student loan forgiveness. Some borrowers claim that schools defrauded them by using unethical recruitment tactics or by advertising exaggerated post-graduation job placement figures. Supreme Court agrees to review constitutionality of Obamacare mandate panel

The U.S. Supreme Court decided on Jan. 10 to review the constitutionality of an Affordable Care Act provision that allows a panel to mandate that insurers cover preventive medical services without cost to patients. The new decision was issued as an unsigned order in Becerra v. Braidwood Management Inc. No justices dissented. The court did not explain its decision.
