Investigative journalist Matthew Vadum appeared on NewsX World in India on July 30, 2026, to discuss two major developing stories: Saudi Arabia’s launch of a new multinational maritime defense alliance and President Donald Trump’s suggestion that he may temporarily withdraw the nomination of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
In one segment, Vadum addressed Saudi Arabia’s announcement that it is founding a Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance focused on the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and Gulf of Aden. The kingdom hosted a meeting in Riyadh attended by military representatives from 43 countries and the European Union. Fourteen nations issued a joint statement of support, with Saudi Arabia designated as the founding and leading state and host of the alliance headquarters.
Vadum noted the initiative comes amid ongoing threats to commercial shipping from Iran-backed Houthi forces and the broader regional tensions tied to the Iran conflict. He observed that the United States has engaged with the proposal—U.S. representatives attended the Riyadh meeting—and that Washington appears interested but has not yet formally committed assets, given the demands already placed on U.S. forces in the region.
In the other segment, Vadum turned to domestic politics, analyzing Trump’s public comments about potentially pulling Blanche’s nomination for attorney general. Two Republican senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee—John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina—have blocked advancement of the nomination by demanding written assurances related to a controversial IRS settlement provision related to the so-called anti-weaponization fund. Both senators are leaving the Senate at the end of the current term.
Trump responded to the Senate bottleneck by praising Blanche while signaling he is prepared to keep him as acting attorney general for now and renominate him after the two holdouts depart office. Vadum framed the episode as an internal Republican conflict over the terms of the nomination rather than a broader collapse of support for the nominee.
