Journalist and author Matthew Vadum appeared September 20, 2026, in pre-taped segments on Republic TV in India to discuss the upcoming meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Sunday show is called “Looking Forward.” The segments were taped the day before.

Trump and Xi will meet at the White House on September 24 after meeting in Beijing in May of this year. This will be Xi’s first visit to the White House in more than 10 years.

Several aspects of the approaching meeting were covered.

“Beijing has been Iran’s main customer for that crude [oil], even if the war and the blockade have cut the flow,” Vadum said. “If the visit passes without a public break, both governments will call it a success. The measure that matters is whether that tariff truce is extended in writing, and whether anything is decided on Taiwan, technology, or rare earths that was not already on the table before Xi arrived.”

“There may be Chinese orders for Boeing jets, Chinese purchases of American farm goods, and talk of cutting tariffs on a limited segment of each other’s exports. There may be some kind of conversation about artificial intelligence. What the meeting will not settle is Taiwan, export controls, or the imbalance in trade. Trump will want China to stop buying Iranian oil,” he said.

“The expected result is an extension of the tariff truce reached in Busan last year — more rare-earth shipments from China, and no new American tariff spike above the level set at that time. That tariff truce runs out in November. China has wanted it to last through the rest of Trump’s term,” Vadum said.
