I was on NewsX World and its sister network, NewsX, in India, in back-to-back appearances last night (April 25-26, 2026) regarding the apparent assassination attempt directed at President Donald Trump.
Cole Tomas Allen, a teacher from California, was apprehended at the Washington Hilton outside the White House Correspondents’ Association’s annual banquet on the evening of April 25. Allen fired off a few shots, but was reportedly taken down before he got past the magnetometers (metal detectors) people had to pass through to enter the event. Police said he was registered as a guest at the hotel. (Note that some of these facts may turn out to be wrong. Often when an event like this happens, some things reported as facts in the heat of the moment end up being wrong.)
On NewsX, I said this would be the second presidential assassination attempt to take place at the Washington Hilton. John Hinckley shot President Ronald Reagan outside an entrance to the Hilton in 1981 a few weeks after Reagan was inaugurated. In an example of macabre humor, local police refer to the hotel as the “Hinckley Hilton.”
I also said I was glad that the Secret Service was at the top of its game and nabbed the perpetrator quickly. In retrospect, I regret saying that because after the broadcast, it was reported that Cole began assembling a weapon in an unattended room near the metal detectors leading into the hotel ballroom. The Secret Service seemingly fell down on the job yet again.
